My Hand-Tied Hair Extensions Q & A
Ok ladies, let’s talk hair. I get so many questions on this topic and I am so happy to share a hair secret with you!
Last month I decided I needed a little spice when it came to my hair.
I’ve always wanted mermaid hair – my hair is already naturally thick but to get some of the hairstyles that you see on the ‘gram – it’s only possible with extensions! The secret to magical mermaid hair are the hand-tied hair extensions installed by the one and only Marisela!
Below are all the details — I hope you enjoy, and please let me know if you have any questions.
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR EXTENSIONS DONE?
WHAT TYPE OF EXTENSIONS DO YOU HAVE?
I have Hand-Tied hair extensions! The hair extensions are put into your hair in rows by creating a “track” with a super cool bead and string technique. The extensions are then placed on the track and sewn in!
CAN YOU WEAR YOUR HAIR UP WITH THE EXTENSIONS?
Yes you can!! You can wear your hair basically any way you want to. Because of the way the extensions are attached to your hair, then are hidden. I wear my hair up pretty much every day and braid it during it workouts.
CAN YOU PUT HEAT ON THEM?
Yes! They are made out of real human hair! Although, the more heat you put on them the more damaged they will get (just like your own hair). So it is suggested you don’t overuse blowdryers or wash it too often.
DO HAND-TIED HAIR EXTENSIONS HURT?
This will probably be different for everyone, but for me, no they did not! The first few days your hair will feel a bit tight and itchy- it will feel like you are wearing a headband or clip ons. After they loosen a bit you don’t even realize they are there! The first two nights sleeping was a bit odd because it didn’t feel great to lay on them, so I kind of slept on my side/face. But now I sleep like a normal person.
Oh, and the installation process doesn’t hurt at all!
DO HAND-TIED HAIR EXTENSIONS DAMAGE YOUR HAIR?
Hand Tied Hair Extensions are supposed to be the least damaging extensions, besides clip-in extensions! You will always have some natural breakage with extensions, but this method has proven to be the least damaging because they have the least amount of contact points on your head! Basically because they are attached with a small number of beads, there are not many areas to cause damage. Other extensions have more contact with your hair, which leads to more damage.
I will keep you posted on any damage I may receive!
HOW LONG DO HAND-TIED EXTENSIONS LAST?
You have to have your extensions tightened (or moved up) every 6-8 weeks, depending on how quickly your natural hair grows! The extension hair lasts around 6-8 months, depending on how well you take care of it. Marisela walked me through every step of the way of extension care and sent me home with an array of products from shampoo, to hair detangler, to dry conditioner.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO INSTALL HAND-TIED HAIR EXTENSIONS?
The installation process takes an average of two to three hours! Marisela did color my hair and also had to color match the extensions, so I’d say my appointment was on the longer side.
HOW MUCH DO HAND-TIED HAIR EXTENSIONS COST?
I’ll start off my saying that Hand Tied Hair extensions are definitely an investment! The price will differ depending on what salon you go to. Your first appointment will be the most expensive because you have to pay for the actual hair, plus the styling fees. But after that you will only have to pay for the styling fees. The average cost of the hair is $400-700+. Length and thickness play factors in the price!
Since my hair is already pretty thick and was at 18 inches, I was able to get away with installing less hair at the 22 inch length.
WHAT IS THE WASHING AND DRYING PROCESS LIKE?
This was the part of getting extensions that I was most nervous about! To my pleasant surprise, washing and drying my extensions didn’t add too much more time to my routine! It obviously takes a bit longer to wash and dry because you have more hair, but it honestly only added maybe 20 minutes to my usual routine. This will obviously differ per person, and the length and thickness of your extensions.
When you wash your hair, you want to make sure the shampoo gets to your roots and around the extensions. You also want to make sure you get all of the shampoo out of your roots. Since you have more hair now, you’ll want to pay attention the first few showers until it just comes natural to you.
When drying your hair, you want to make sure that your roots are throughly dry. I usually get my roots dry and then let the rest of my hair air-dry!
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR EXTENSIONS?
The best part of these extensions is how much longer you will be able to go without washing your hair! Just like your natural hair, it is healthier not to wash them every day!
Whew! That was a lot of info, but I hope it answered your questions and sparked your interest in these amazing extensions! Overall, I 100% recommend them and I will never go back to any other kind.
Please contact Marisela if you live in the DFW area and you are interested. Tell her I sent you!
